Bengaluru, June 26 (NationPress) In a troubling event, the unnatural demise of a tigress and her three cubs, likely due to poisoning, has been reported in the Male Mahadeshwara Hills Wildlife Sanctuary located in Karnataka's Chamarajanagar district this Thursday.
Speaking to the media in Bengaluru, Forests, Ecology, and Environment Minister Eshwar Khandre revealed that an investigation is underway, with officials instructed to provide a comprehensive report within three days.
The investigation will be led by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF).
Khandre expressed, "Karnataka ranks second in the nation for tiger populations, boasting 563 tigers. It's profoundly disheartening to hear about the loss of a tigress and her cubs in a state renowned for its conservation initiatives."
He emphasized the need for an immediate site inspection and warned that severe actions would follow if any negligence is discovered among Forest Department staff. "Should anyone be found guilty of poisoning wildlife, they must face criminal charges," he remarked.
The Minister also urged that the investigation should explore whether electrocution contributed to the deaths and take suitable measures if that is the case.
This tragic incident has sparked concern among both forest officials and wildlife advocates, with suspicions growing that criminals may have poisoned the animals. Authorities are advocating for an in-depth investigation to ascertain the precise cause of death.
Reports suggest that the situation came to light when Forest Department staff were patrolling the reserve forest in Hanur taluk on Wednesday. It is believed that the tigress and her cubs perished after consuming meat tainted with poison.
The remains of the tigress and her cubs were discovered in the Meenyam forests, within the Hoogyam range of the sanctuary.
Sources indicate that the tigress had killed a cow and dragged it into the forest, from which she and her cubs had partially eaten. It is suspected that local villagers may have poisoned the carcass. The tigress and her cubs died after consuming the tainted meat upon returning to the kill.
Senior forest officials have arrived at the scene and commenced an investigation. They have indicated that this appears to be a prima facie case of poisoning, pending the post-mortem report.
The Male Mahadeshwara Hill Wildlife Sanctuary spans 906 square kilometers and is a vital habitat for various wildlife species, including tigers, elephants, and leopards.
