BJP's Manoj Tiwari Slams TMC Over Fish Consumption Controversy
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 13 (NationPress) The political climate in West Bengal is heating up over cultural identity and dietary practices, as BJP MP Manoj Tiwari sharply criticized the Trinamool Congress (TMC) for allegedly disseminating misinformation in the lead-up to elections.
In light of the ongoing debate regarding fish consumption and regional identity, Tiwari stated, “The TMC has transformed into a party of rumors. In the Mithila region of Bihar, fish is a common food. People choose what to eat and what to wear based on their preferences. Our party’s motto of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ embodies this principle.”
He emphasized that the ruling party in Bengal is losing its political footing, asserting, “Now that they lack substantial arguments, they resort to spreading rumors. However, the people of Bengal will no longer be fooled; they will shift their allegiance to the BJP.”
These comments arise amid a growing political discourse centered on the slogan “Mache Bhate Bangali (fish and rice characterize Bengalis),” which has become a contentious issue between the BJP and the TMC in the upcoming West Bengal elections.
The TMC has accused the BJP of attempting to disrupt local food customs and cultural practices, while the BJP claims to counteract what it describes as “false narratives” aimed at electoral manipulation.
On the previous Friday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee vehemently responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statements regarding fish production. Speaking at a rally in Barasat, she defended the state’s achievements in fisheries and questioned Modi's comparisons with other states.
She pointed out PM Modi's claim that Bihar produces more fish than Bengal and sells it to other states, suggesting, “This assertion is misleading because the residents of Bihar are not permitted to consume fish,” while underscoring Bengal’s growth in fish production and income generation within the fisheries sector.
She added that fish production in saline waters alone reached 1.98 lakh metric tonnes and emphasized the significant increase in earnings for fisherfolk under the TMC government.
As the political dialogue escalates, Bengal’s deep-rooted cultural identity associated with fish-eating habits has increasingly emerged as a pivotal theme in campaign discussions, transforming everyday food preferences into a contentious electoral issue.
