Manoj Tiwari: West Bengal voters choosing BJP fearlessly despite poll violence
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Manoj Tiwari on Wednesday, 29 April launched a sharp attack on the opposition, asserting that voters in West Bengal were casting their ballots fearlessly for the BJP despite reported incidents of violence and alleged attempts to suppress the party's symbol during polling.
Tiwari's Confidence on Bengal Polling
Speaking to news agency IANS, Tiwari dismissed attempts to obstruct BJP voters, stating, "Look, by putting tape on the BJP's symbol, you cannot stop the voters. A few reports of violence have come in, but today West Bengal is voting fearlessly, and they can try as much as they can, but they will not be able to stop the people from voting for the BJP."
The Delhi MP expressed strong confidence in the BJP's electoral prospects in the state, framing the reported disruptions as a sign of desperation among rival political forces rather than a genuine threat to voter turnout.
Attack on Arvind Kejriwal and AAP
Tiwari also turned his attention to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of political opportunism in the context of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's anticipated electoral difficulties. "Arvind Kejriwal is afraid that Mamata Banerjee is also losing. He is trying to show Mamata that she is losing so he is in grief. People like Arvind Kejriwal will never be able to stand firm, given the way he has misled the public, misused the system, and engaged in corruption," Tiwari alleged.
The remarks come amid heightened political tensions, with multiple opposition parties manoeuvring ahead of possible post-poll alliance scenarios. Critics of Tiwari's claims, however, note that such allegations remain unverified and are contested by the AAP.
Criticism of Saurabh Bharadwaj's Remarks
Tiwari also criticised AAP Delhi President Saurabh Bharadwaj over comments reportedly made about Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha's personal and married life. Calling the remarks inappropriate, Tiwari said, "What kind of values Saurabh Bharadwaj has is reflected in his statements. Why are you making personal comments? If I say anything on this now, it will look very unpleasant for these people — so they can keep their 'values'."
The BJP MP concluded by expressing appreciation for Chadha's political alignment, stating, "Raghav Chadha has seen the country's future in PM Modi; thanks to him and his associates."
Broader Context
The West Bengal elections have historically been marked by allegations of poll violence and booth-level intimidation from multiple sides. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has deployed central forces across sensitive constituencies this cycle. Notably, this is not the first time BJP leaders have accused the ruling All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) of voter suppression — similar allegations surfaced during the 2021 Assembly elections. The outcome of the current polling rounds is expected to shape the BJP's strategy in eastern India ahead of future state contests.
