Chennai, May 12 (NationPress) In light of a significant increase in fever cases in the mountainous area of Valparai within Coimbatore district, the Tamil Nadu Health Department has called upon the local municipality to enhance preventive measures aimed at curbing the infection's spread, according to officials.
A formal advisory was issued to the Valparai municipality following an alarming rise in fever cases, especially those linked to low platelet counts, raising fears of a potential dengue outbreak.
Reports indicate that the Valparai Government Hospital is experiencing a surge in patients displaying symptoms of fever accompanied by thrombocytopenia.
Many of these patients are being transferred to the Coimbatore District Government Headquarters Hospital in Pollachi, particularly when a patient's platelet count falls below 100,000.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at the Valparai Government Hospital has communicated with the Municipal Commissioner, advocating for intensified initiatives such as water chlorination and the elimination of mosquito breeding sites.
The CMO has also instructed the Block Medical Officer (BMO) to set up fever screening camps in affected areas through primary health centres (PHCs).
The 62-bed Valparai Government Hospital is currently operating at about 80 percent capacity, attending to more than 300 outpatients each day.
"Despite limited staff, we are handling the situation effectively. We treat 20–25 outpatients daily for fever, admitting 4–5 cases. Most patients present with thrombocytopenia, indicating a likely dengue infection. Just on Saturday, four patients were referred to Pollachi," stated a source within the health department.
Fever cases have been primarily reported from locations such as Anna Nagar, Kamarajar Nagar, MGR Nagar, Kakkan Colony, and nearby areas.
A recent fatality at the Valparai hospital due to complications from fever has led authorities to enforce strict referral protocols.
Additionally, several patients have tested positive for hepatitis A and C, suggesting potential water contamination issues.
Over the past week, 18 patients have been admitted to the hospital, including nine within the last two days.
