Chennai, May 1 (NationPress) Tamil Nadu's School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi announced on Thursday that the decision regarding the postponement of school reopenings in the state will be made closer to the scheduled date, influenced by the current heatwave conditions and in consultation with Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

During a press briefing, Poyyamozhi emphasized that the state is enduring extreme heat.

"Tamil Nadu is grappling with intense summer heat, with Tiruchi recording 104 degrees Fahrenheit just yesterday. Schools are set to reopen on June 2, but a weather assessment will guide our decision," he stated.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued alerts regarding severe heatwave conditions, especially in coastal areas, advising residents to take necessary precautions.

In response to this, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (DPH) has disseminated comprehensive safety guidelines aimed at helping residents manage the extreme temperatures. The advisories include maintaining hydration by drinking sufficient water throughout the day and limiting direct sunlight exposure.

"Residents are encouraged to remain indoors between 12 noon and 3 p.m., when the sun is at its strongest," the department advised. They also suggested utilizing umbrellas or hats for protection and recommended against engaging in strenuous activities during peak heat hours.

The health advisory further warned against leaving children or pets in parked vehicles due to the risk of rapid temperature increases that could lead to grave consequences. Additionally, the public is urged to minimize the intake of soft drinks, coffee, tea, and alcohol as these can exacerbate dehydration.

To mitigate indoor heat, residents should avoid cooking during peak hours. The advisory also discourages walking barefoot on hot surfaces and consuming high-protein foods or expired products, as these can increase physical strain in high temperatures.

Poyyamozhi also issued a firm warning to private schools regarding compliance with fee regulations.

"We will enforce strict measures against any institution that charges fees beyond the government-mandated rates," he warned.

On the topic of the National Education Policy (NEP), he expressed concern over its provisions for public examinations in Classes 3, 5, and 8, reiterating that the state adheres to a no-detention policy until Class 8. "These exams could potentially raise dropout rates among children," he remarked.

When asked about the caste-wise census, Poyyamozhi noted that the Centre has yet to provide a timeline. "With elections approaching in five states, we can anticipate numerous announcements from the Union government. However, announcements must translate into action," he concluded.
