Chennai, Sep 10 (NationPress) The Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services is intensifying its efforts in preparation for the northeast monsoon, implementing a district-specific disaster management strategy in collaboration with the district administration and related departments.

The Director General of Police (DGP) Seema Agarwal, who leads the department, indicated that her teams are evaluating potential disasters that might occur in each district and are outlining the necessary resources.

“We are determining the types of disasters likely to arise in each district and planning for the deployment or enhancement of resources accordingly. For example, in the event of a severe flood in one district, we will promptly mobilize personnel and equipment from neighboring districts,” she stated.

Additionally, mock drills will be organized in the upcoming days to ensure readiness.

Agarwal emphasized that the department maintains ongoing coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to train fire service personnel in managing various emergencies.

“In Vellore, there is no risk of flooding or tsunamis. However, in Tiruvannamalai, where a landslide occurred last year, our training is adapted accordingly. Teams are being prepared to respond based on each district's vulnerability,” she elaborated.

Discussing fire safety—especially given the rise of high-rise buildings in even Tier-2 cities—Agarwal highlighted the necessity of implementing preventive measures during the initial building planning stages.

“A water tank must be present on the lower floor as well as on the top. Hydrant points must be accessible for water to be drawn and sprayed in case of fire emergencies. Buildings must comply with these regulations before receiving a license. If a fire does occur, the fire department will intervene to control it,” she explained.

She also noted that high-rise ladders and specialized equipment are already available and are being enhanced wherever necessary. “We are steadily bolstering our capabilities to align with the increasing urban challenges,” she remarked.

As the monsoon approaches, officials indicate that a proactive strategy combining training, equipment, and inter-departmental coordination is projected to improve Tamil Nadu’s disaster response capacity.
