Shimla, April 28 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Sukhvinder Sukhu, announced on Monday that the transport sector contributes to the emission of 16 to 20 percent of greenhouse gases within the state.

To combat the pollution affecting the state's untouched beauty, the government is moving towards electric mobility.

“This scenario poses a significant threat to our environmental health. The rising number of petrol and diesel vehicles is a primary contributor to pollution, which is increasingly concerning,” he stated.

While presiding over the All India Motor Transport Congress, known as the National Truck and Bus Meet in Kasauli, the Chief Minister emphasized, “In light of this, our government has resolved to promote the use of e-vehicles.”

This initiative not only aims to protect and preserve the environment but also to reduce air pollution. Himachal Pradesh, renowned for its breathtaking scenery, attracts tourists from around the globe.

The influx of visitors also impacts the environment in hilly regions like Himachal Pradesh. Therefore, the government is enhancing tourism infrastructure while prioritizing environmental protection and sustainable development, he noted.

The Chief Minister announced a goal for Himachal Pradesh to become a green energy state by March 2026.

The action plan to achieve this includes promoting electric vehicles and expanding the necessary infrastructure. “I am pleased that this event not only supports the sustainable development of Himachal Pradesh but also contributes to creating strategies for future environmental sustainability,” he said.

The government is also formulating policies with a focus on environmental conservation.

The government has initiated the Rs 680 crore Rajiv Gandhi Swarojgar Start-up Yojana, which provides a 50 percent subsidy for young people buying e-taxis.

These e-taxis are linked to various government sectors, corporations, boards, and other institutions. Under the e-taxi initiative, 50 e-taxis are already in use, with an additional 50 expected to be approved by May 10.

“I have been using an e-vehicle for some time, and it is quite economical,” he added, mentioning that this year, the government plans to convert 3,000 petrol and diesel vehicles to e-vehicles.

To provide clean and green transportation for residents and tourists alike, diesel buses are being converted into e-buses progressively.

The Himachal Road Transport Corp (HRTC) has issued tenders for 297 e-buses at a cost of Rs 412 crore, with charging stations being established at bus stations for Rs 124 crore.

The Chief Minister confirmed that this fiscal year, an additional 500 e-buses will be procured, and six green corridors have been developed in the state, with plans for 41 more charging stations in these corridors.
