Kolkata, April 7 (NationPress) On Tuesday, the Trinamool Congress reached out to the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding the unwarranted police harassment experienced by its local party officials and supporters in a key Assembly constituency in West Bengal.

In a letter addressed to Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal, Derek O'Brien, a member of the National Working Committee and a Rajya Sabha member from Trinamool, urged for protective measures for party leaders and their supporters against unwarranted police actions in the Nandigram Assembly constituency located in East Midnapore district. This constituency is notably the home turf of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) figure, Suvendu Adhikari.

LoP Adhikari is contesting elections from both Nandigram and Bhabanipur Assembly segments this time around, where he faces off against the incumbent Trinamool Congress MLA and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Interestingly, on Monday, Adhikari sent a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, claiming that undercover police officers were surveilling his campaign in Bhabanipur.

Within a day of Adhikari's complaint, the Trinamool Congress escalated their concerns to the ECI, reporting similar harassment faced by their party members in Nandigram.

In his correspondence with the West Bengal CEO, O'Brien accused Adhikari of using his political clout to instigate police harassment against local Trinamool leaders and supporters, which included unnecessary raids and searches at their homes.

O'Brien emphasized that such biased police actions in Nandigram contravene ECI guidelines meant to uphold free and fair elections, representing a direct effort to undermine the Trinamool Congress' organizational presence in the area.

He also expressed alarm that if this one-sided police approach persists, it could lead to electoral malpractice, including rigging, booth capturing, and voter intimidation on election day in Nandigram.

Nandigram is scheduled to hold elections in the first phase on April 23, while Bhabanipur will follow suit in the second phase on April 29.

Point of View

The integrity of the election process is under scrutiny. As the date approaches, these developments warrant close attention from both voters and political analysts.
