Trinamool Congress Urges ECI to Dismiss Bhabanipur RO, Cites Allegations of Bias
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 25 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress has reached out to the Election Commission of India (ECI) demanding the swift dismissal of the recently appointed returning officer (RO) for the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency in South Kolkata. This constituency sees Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, representing the Trinamool Congress, facing off against Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and a candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
On March 23, the ECI announced the replacement of 74 ROs throughout West Bengal, ahead of the upcoming two-phase elections next month. Among these, Surajit Roy was designated as the new Returning Officer for Bhabanipur. The Trinamool Congress is now challenging Roy's appointment in their appeal to the ECI.
“It is widely known that Roy is a close ally of the Leader of Opposition and tends to act according to his directives. This raises concerns about potential irregularities following his selection as the RO for Bhabanipur, prompting us to formally object to the Commission regarding his appointment,” stated a senior Trinamool Congress official.
Tensions have escalated between the state government and the ECI following the latter's decision to transfer and replace several bureaucrats and police officials from West Bengal to other states. The simultaneous transfer of 72 ROs has only intensified these conflicts.
The ruling party has accused the Commission of executing these transfers and replacements under the influence of the Union government and the BJP.
A pivotal hearing regarding a public interest litigation contesting these transfers is set to take place later today at a division bench of the Calcutta High Court.
In addition to contesting in Bhabanipur, Suvendu Adhikari is also running for election in Nandigram, East Midnapore, where he previously served two terms—first as a member of the Trinamool Congress and subsequently as a representative of the BJP.
The elections in West Bengal will occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The first phase will cover voting for 152 Assembly constituencies, while the second phase will include the remaining 142 seats.
