New Delhi, March 31 (NationPress) In West Bengal, the upcoming state election at the end of April is shaping up to be more than just a political duel; it has evolved into a fierce battle for identity and power between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her former ally, now the Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari.

Welcome to the politically charged Bhabanipur Assembly seat.

Things turned intensely personal in 2021, when Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee decided to challenge her former protégé Suvendu Adhikari in his stronghold of Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district.

This contest was seen by many Trinamool supporters as a way to “teach Suvendu a lesson” for abandoning the party, but the outcome was not favorable for Mamata Banerjee.

She was defeated by a margin of nearly 2,000 votes, although her party, the Trinamool Congress, emerged victorious in the 2021 Assembly elections, securing 215 out of the 294 seats.

Mamata Banerjee, known for her astuteness, relied on her mentorship of Adhikari, failing to recognize that it was Suvendu who had played a pivotal role in the Nandigram resistance of 2007, a significant movement that contributed to the Left Front's downfall in 2011.

The Adhikari family has a deep-seated political legacy in Purba Medinipur. His father, Sisir Adhikari, served as the Trinamool Congress MP for the Kanthi Lok Sabha constituency three consecutive times (2009, 2014, and 2019).

Due to age and health concerns, Sisir stepped aside in 2024, allowing his son Soumendu to win as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate.

Interestingly, the BJP claimed four of the seven Assembly constituencies that make up the Parliamentary seat in the 2021 state elections.

Since Suvendu's breakup with the Trinamool Congress, the family has distanced itself from the party.

Additionally, the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat, which includes Nandigram among its seven Assembly segments, was also won by BJP candidate Abhijit Gangopadhyay. Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee capitalized on another by-election in her home area of Bhabanipur to secure her position for a third consecutive term as Chief Minister of West Bengal.

Now, her former mentee, Suvendu Adhikari, has brought the confrontation to her doorstep.

Moreover, Suvendu has opted to file his nomination for Nandigram as well, keeping his options open for a seat in the state Assembly and demonstrating a confidence that is causing some unease within the Trinamool ranks.

Prominent figures from the Trinamool's state leadership are actively campaigning for Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur as she embarks on an election tour across the state.

Suvendu has highlighted several aspects that bolster his confidence. He has claimed that the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will eliminate a significant portion of the Trinamool vote bank, which he alleges consists of “non-existent” individuals or “illegal migrants”. He is also banking on anti-incumbency sentiments, primarily stemming from law and order issues, including the shocking rape and murder of a medical intern at R.G. Kar Hospital, political violence, and fraud and smuggling allegations against Trinamool leaders by central investigative agencies.

Furthermore, a record number of administrative and police officers have been transferred by the state Chief Election office, whom Suvendu Adhikari describes as being loyal to Mamata Banerjee.

The Bhabanipur returning officer has even been replaced, facing accusations from the Trinamool Congress of having close ties with Suvendu Adhikari.

As the ruling party and the principal opposition trade barbs, Bhabanipur has become the focal point in anticipation of a showdown between these two political giants.

For context, it's worth noting that Mamata Banerjee has only lost two elections throughout her extensive career, initially representing the Congress before establishing her own party in 1998.

She first became an MP from the Jadavpur constituency in 1984, defeating CPI-M veteran Somnath Chatterjee, but lost to CPI-M's Malini Bhattacharya in 1989.

From 1991 to 2009, she won six consecutive elections from the Kolkata Dakshin Parliamentary seat.

After her party, then allied with Congress, defeated the Left Front, Mamata Banerjee vacated her Parliamentary seat to contest a by-election from Bhabanipur in 2011.

She retained this seat in 2016 but opted to shift to Nandigram in the last Assembly election of 2021.
