Why Were 10,553 Voters Excluded in Suvendu Adhikari's Constituency?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 17 (NationPress) In a surprising turn of events, 10,553 names have been removed from the voters' list for October 2025 in the Nandigram Assembly Constituency, located in West Bengal's East Midnapore district, represented by the Leader of Opposition (LoP), Suvendu Adhikari.
The initial draft of the voters' list was unveiled on Tuesday, marking the completion of the first phase of the three-stage Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
This number is notably lower than the 44,700 excluded voters from the previous list in Bhabanipur Assembly Constituency in South Kolkata, where the Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, serves as the elected legislator.
At the polling booth in Nandigram, where the LoP casts his vote, the draft voters' list indicates that the number of excluded voters is a mere 11. Of these, six individuals have passed away, four have relocated, and one remains untraceable.
Conversely, in Bhabanipur, where the Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee vote, the count of excluded voters is 127. Among these, 13 have died, while the remainder consists of either relocated voters, untraceable individuals, duplicate entries, or those excluded for other valid reasons.
It is worth noting that in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, Adhikari won his seat in Nandigram, defeating Mamata Banerjee by a margin of just under 2,000 votes.
Later, Mamata Banerjee was re-elected in a by-election from Bhabanipur, securing her position as Chief Minister for a third consecutive term.
Interestingly, Bhabanipur is one of the seven Assembly constituencies that fall under the Kolkata (Dakshin) Lok Sabha constituency.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, although the Trinamool Congress candidate Mala Roy was re-elected from Kolkata (Dakshin), she fell behind in the majority of municipal corporation wards in Bhabanipur and its neighboring Rashbehari constituency.
In 2024, the Trinamool Congress even lagged in Ward Number 73 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, where the Chief Minister is registered as a voter.
