Will More Voters' Names Be Removed in Bengal?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 16 (NationPress) A staggering 58.08 lakh voters from the previous voters' list in West Bengal as of October 2025 were excluded in the draft voters' list published on Tuesday. The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) and prominent BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has indicated that more names are likely to be eliminated following the hearing on claims and objections regarding the draft list.
However, LoP Adhikari refrained from providing a specific number, a shift from his earlier predictions made several months ago.
A member of the state BJP committee reported that the Central leadership had recently advised state leaders against quoting any projected figures regarding the number of voters' names to be discarded, prompting the LoP to adopt a cautious stance.
"What I can confirm is that the number of excluded voters will significantly increase in the final voters' list scheduled for publication on February 14, 2026," Adhikari stated to the media on Tuesday evening, shortly after the draft voters' list was made public.
Political analysts believe that Adhikari's assertiveness stems from the fact that beyond the already identified 58.08 lakh excluded voters, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has flagged approximately 1.60 crore additional voters due to peculiarities observed in their family-tree data during the "progeny mapping" process.
This group includes individuals whose fathers were as young as 15 years old when they became parents, cases where fathers and mothers share the same name, and instances where grandfathers were merely 40 years old or younger when they became grandfathers.
All these cases will undergo scrutiny during the second phase of the voter revision exercise, where clarifications regarding their voter data will be requested. The final voters' list will be published only after this process, slated for February 14, 2026.
Post-publication of the final voters' list, the ECI will announce the dates for the forthcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal.
