Trinamool Congress Picks Ritabrata Banerjee for Rajya Sabha By-Elections

Kolkata, Dec 7 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress has announced the nomination of Ritabrata Banerjee for the impending by-elections to the Rajya Sabha in Bengal.

In a post on social media platform X, the Trinamool Congress stated, "Under the guidance of Hon'ble Chairperson @MamataOfficial, we are delighted to declare the candidacy of Ritabrata Banerjee (@RitabrataBanerj) for the upcoming Rajya Sabha Bye-Elections."

"We extend our best wishes to him. May he strive to uphold the Trinamool legacy of unwavering spirit and continue to advocate for the rights of all Indians," the statement continued.

Trinamool Congress general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee praised Ritabrata Banerjee for his nomination.

"This recognition is indeed well-deserved, showcasing the relentless dedication @RitabrataBanerji has shown in fortifying the organization and championing the rights of trade union workers throughout West Bengal. Although it requires time, commitment, performance, and diligence are invariably rewarded in the long run," shared a statement from Abhishek Banerjee.

The seat became vacant after MP and former bureaucrat Jawhar Sircar resigned from the Rajya Sabha and the Trinamool Congress in protest against the tragic rape and murder of a doctor from R. G. Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata, as well as the allegations of "corruption" within the state administration.

Multiple names circulated for the nomination, ultimately leading to the selection of Ritabrata Banerjee.

Ritabrata Banerjee, previously the general secretary of the CPI(M)'s student wing Students' Federation of India (SFI), was first nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2014.

Expelled from the CPI-M in 2017, he served as an independent Rajya Sabha member for three years.

Subsequently, Ritabrata Banerjee joined the Trinamool Congress and was appointed the state president of the party's trade union wing, Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress (INTTUC), in 2021.
