Did Trinamool MLA Assault Students in Nadia?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 9 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress MLA Bimalendu Sinha Roy has been accused of assaulting students who were on their way home in Nadia district of West Bengal. This incident led to a protest by students and agitated locals outside his residence, where he has vehemently denied the allegations. The MLA claims this is part of a conspiracy orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to damage his reputation.
The event unfolded on Sunday night in Baliadanga village under the jurisdiction of Murutia police station in Nadia. Reports indicate that several Class 12 students were returning home after attending private tuition in the Baliadanga area.
At the same time, the MLA was also heading home after a party event. It is alleged that the MLA's vehicle was honking for the students to move aside. When the students did not comply, he reportedly exited his vehicle and confronted them, resulting in a heated argument and accusations of physical assault.
In response, locals gathered outside the MLA's home, demanding that he come forward and deliver an unconditional apology.
Police from the Murutia station responded to the situation, but the protests persisted for a while.
On his part, Roy stated: "I was merely conversing with the students when some local BJP leaders attempted to embarrass me, but their efforts were futile. I have acted appropriately and am in no way complicit in this vile act. The BJP has tried various tactics to harass me, but they have not succeeded."
The BJP has dismissed Roy's accusations, with local leaders asserting that he is attempting to deflect blame for his own actions. A local BJP leader, Gouranga Das, stated, "The students and villagers are aware of the truth. The common people will address this falsehood at the appropriate time."
