New Delhi, March 16 (NationPress) In a significant turn of events, the Trinamool Congress has escalated its conflict with the Election Commission of India (ECI) by staging a day-long walkout from the Rajya Sabha on Monday. This protest was triggered by the ECI's controversial decision to dismiss several high-ranking officials in West Bengal, which is gearing up for elections, including Chief Secretary Nandini Chakravorty.

This bold action occurred shortly after the ECI revealed the timetable for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, slated for two phases on April 23 and April 29, with counting on May 4.

Trinamool MP Derek O’Brien passionately raised the matter just before Zero Hour, condemning the ECI's actions as a “midnight maneuver” aimed at destabilizing the state's administrative framework.

“In the dead of night, the chief secretary, the principal secretary, and the home secretary have been ousted by the EC. They possess the authority to make such changes,” O’Brien stated, alleging that the poll agency is overstepping its bounds and showing bias.

He declared that his party would exit the House in a strong rebuke of what Trinamool perceives as an assault on the leadership of Mamata Banerjee ahead of critical elections.

The reshuffle, announced late Sunday night through a directive to the state government, also included the removal of Home Secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena.

The ECI appointed Dushyant Nariala, an IAS officer from the 1993 batch, as the new Chief Secretary and instructed that Chakravorty be excluded from all election-related responsibilities to guarantee fairness during the electoral process.

Sanghamitra Ghosh has been designated the new Principal Secretary for Home and Hill Affairs.

The Trinamool Congress has long-standing grievances against the ECI, particularly regarding perceived irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal and accusations of partisan behavior.

Opposition groups, including Trinamool, have consistently criticized the Commission, with some even submitting notices demanding the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner.

The ECI asserts that such transfers are routine in election-bound states to uphold neutrality and ensure effective management of the electoral process.
