Kolkata, Dec 4 (NationPress) — The Trinamool Congress has officially suspended Humayun Kabir, the representative from the Bharatapur Assembly constituency in the minority-rich Murshidabad district, as of Thursday. His recent proposition to erect a Babri Mosque in Beldanga, mirroring the structure in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, which faced demolition in December 1992, sparked considerable controversy.
According to Firhad Hakim, the Minister for Municipal Affairs and Urban Development in West Bengal and current Mayor of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), the party's decision stemmed from Kabir's activities that were perceived as politically charged with religious undertones, marking a significant breach of party protocol.
Hakim stated, “The party will sever all ties with Kabir. His announcement regarding the construction of the Babri Mosque seeks to rekindle the painful memories from 1992. We suspect that the BJP may have a hand in his recent endeavors, aiming to stir divisive politics by placing Kabir in the spotlight.”
In response to the suspension, Kabir indicated he would submit his resignation on Friday, though it remains uncertain if he would step down from the party, the MLA position, or both.
“I will refrain from commenting on Hakim's statements. I will submit my resignation tomorrow,” he remarked.
A public interest litigation has been filed in front of a division bench led by Calcutta High Court's Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul, contesting Kabir's declaration to construct the Babri Mosque at Beldanga.
Disputes have intensified surrounding the land in Beldanga, where Kabir has proposed the mosque's construction. The landowner, a farmer from Murshidabad, has firmly stated he will neither sell the land nor permit the construction of a Babri Masjid on it, even building a boundary wall around the property. In a defiant response, Kabir declared he would “give his life” to ensure the mosque's establishment if it comes to that.
Previously, Kabir had faced multiple warnings from the Trinamool Congress leadership for alleged activities against the party and making public remarks that brought embarrassment. Ultimately, the party announced his suspension on Thursday.
