Kolkata, March 27 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress' internal disciplinary committee in the West Bengal Assembly has compiled a list of around 50 legislators who were absent on the final day of the second phase of the budget session, disregarding the party whip.

A resolution regarding these absences will be made by the party leadership after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee returns to Kolkata from her trip to the UK on Friday night.

Party insiders indicate that the committee has classified the absent legislators into two groups: those who missed the proceedings on March 20 without prior notice or valid reasons, and those who were absent but had given prior notice with justifiable reasons.

The classification process was completed following the receipt of information from the office of Speaker Biman Bandopadhyay regarding legislators who had informed about their absence with valid justifications.

“Upon reviewing the information from the Speaker’s office, it was found that merely 10 legislators, including two from the state cabinet, had provided prior notice with valid reasons for their absence on March 20,” noted a cabinet member familiar with the situation.

Initially, the next meeting of the disciplinary committee was set for March 29 to address the issue of these legislators. However, insiders suggest that this date may be shifted due to the upcoming Eid festival.

“It is likely that the next meeting of the disciplinary committee will be rescheduled to either April 1 or the following day, ensuring that the Chief Minister is back from her trip in England,” stated a cabinet member. The committee members prefer to make decisions regarding disciplinary actions when the Chief Minister is present in the city.

For context, the Trinamool Congress issued a whip mandating all party legislators to maintain 100 percent attendance on the last two days of the second phase of the budget session, March 19 and March 20. While attendance was nearly perfect on March 19, over 50 party legislators failed to attend on March 20, ignoring the party directive.

The party leadership is taking this issue seriously, and it remains to be seen whether the absent legislators will receive a simple warning or face more severe disciplinary measures.

Recently, an MLA from the Bhagalpur Assembly constituency in the Murshidabad district faced the disciplinary committee due to allegedly inappropriate remarks about the Leader of Opposition in the House, Suvendu Adhikari.

However, instead of proposing disciplinary action, he was merely advised to exercise caution and avoid making similar comments in the future.
