Kolkata, March 24 (NationPress) The disciplinary committee of the Trinamool Congress’s legislative party in West Bengal will determine the consequences for MLAs who disregarded party whips regarding attendance in the assembly during proceedings on March 29.

The inaugural meeting of the disciplinary committee was held on Monday, attended by State Parliamentary Affairs Minister Sovandeb Chattopadhyay and Trinamool Congress Chief Whip Nirmal Ghosh.

Previously, a directive was issued by the party's Chief Whip requiring all legislators to be present in the House on March 19 and March 20, coinciding with the final days of the Budget session.

Nonetheless, over 50 legislators failed to attend the House on March 20, and many did not provide any justification to the Chief Whip for their absence.

Insiders within the party indicated that this disregard for the whip has angered the party leadership, prompting them to organize a meeting of the disciplinary committee to seek explanations from the legislators who failed to comply.

At the conclusion of the committee's first meeting, Chattopadhyay informed the media that a list of absent legislators who ignored the whip is being compiled.

“The MLAs in question will be requested to appear before the members of the disciplinary committee. We will engage with them, and decisions will be made subsequently,” Chattopadhyay stated.

The upcoming meeting of the disciplinary committee on March 29, led by Chattopadhyay, will also include other committee members such as Trinamool Congress Chief Whip Nirmal Ghosh, Minister of State for Finance (independent charge) Nirmal Ghosh, State Municipal Affairs & Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim, and State Power Minister Arup Biswas.

Recently, an MLA from the Bharatpur Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district had to appear before the disciplinary committee due to his allegedly inappropriate remarks directed at the Leader of the Opposition in the House, Suvendu Adhikari.

However, rather than recommending disciplinary action, he was merely advised to exercise caution and avoid such comments in the future.
