Agartala, June 11 (NationPress) Tripura Police have taken into custody six individuals, including a doctor and his parents, in relation to a complex love triangle case, officials announced on Wednesday.
The Superintendent of Police for West Tripura, Kiran Kumar K, stated that the arrests occurred late Tuesday night after a young man’s body was discovered stuffed inside a suitcase, which was hidden in an ice-cream freezer in Gandacherra, located in Dhalai district of Tripura.
The deceased, identified as Shariful Islam, aged 28, had been reported missing from Agartala since June 8, with his body being found three days later.
Shariful was employed as an electrician on the Smart City Project in Agartala.
The police chief detailed that Dibakar Saha, the doctor among the arrested, purchased a suitcase two days prior to the crime, in which he concealed Shariful’s body after binding his hands. He then transported the suitcase to Gandacherra and stored it in his father’s ice-cream shop on June 9.
Shariful's family filed a report at the New Capital Complex police station on June 9.
The SP highlighted that preliminary investigations revealed a love triangle as the motive behind the murder.
Shariful had been romantically involved with Dibakar's cousin sister, which also led to Dibakar developing feelings for her.
Alongside Dibakar Saha, 28, the other individuals apprehended include his father Dipak Saha, 52, mother Debika Saha, 40, Nabanita Das, 25, Joydeep Das, 20, and Animesh Yadav, 21.
According to the IPS officer, “The murder stemmed from a love triangle. Shariful was involved with a girl, and the main suspect, Dibakar, is her cousin who also fell for her. Love messages were retrieved from their mobile devices,” as reported to the media.
Authorities indicated that Dibakar had arranged a meeting with Shariful at Joydeep's residence in South Indiranagar on June 8 under the pretense of gifting him items.
“Upon Shariful’s arrival, Dibakar allegedly strangled him in the presence of Joydeep, Animesh, and Nabanita,” the police official revealed.
Law enforcement confirmed the recovery of substantial digital evidence, including mobile communications, which support the love triangle motive and implicate multiple individuals.
All six suspects are scheduled to be presented before the court on Thursday.
This grim discovery follows closely after a widely publicized honeymoon murder case in the neighboring state of Meghalaya, further intensifying national concerns regarding premeditated crimes driven by passion.
