Is Trump's 25% Tariff on Countries Trading with Iran Inappropriate?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 13 (NationPress) Following the announcement by US President Donald Trump that any nation engaging in trade with Iran will incur a 25% tariff, the Congress has condemned this decision as completely inappropriate, unethical, and unacceptable.
In an interview with IANS, senior Congress figure T.S. Singh Deo criticized the US President's actions, stating they demonstrate a bullying attitude towards the international community.
"We have reached a moment where tariffs are being imposed without consideration by Trump. For a leader of a nation to act in such a way towards the global stage is utterly inappropriate, unethical, and unacceptable. Such coercive remarks from the President of a powerful nation like the United States are beyond my imagination," he remarked.
Congress's Uttar Pradesh President, Ajay Rai, also expressed concerns, claiming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's response to this announcement was inadequate.
"I acknowledge that Prime Minister Modi has issued several strong statements in the past. However, he seems to be yielding to Donald Trump, and none of his statements have been effectively acted upon," Rai stated.
Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Kumar Jha characterized Trump's decision as autocratic.
"This is fundamentally a kingly and autocratic stance. Global leaders are attempting to dictate terms—trade here, do not trade there. What gives them the right to make these decisions? Such actions disrupt the equilibrium among countries. India's response should have been significantly stronger," he asserted.
Janata Dal-United leader K.C. Tyagi also criticized Trump's recent actions, labeling them undemocratic and imperialistic.
"All of Trump's recent decisions reflect an undemocratic, dictatorial, and imperialist mindset. We vehemently condemn these actions," Tyagi remarked.
Trump's announcement of a 25% tariff on any country trading with Iran intensifies pressure on Tehran, which is facing a violent crackdown on protests that have resulted in nearly 600 fatalities and thousands of arrests. This decision could disrupt significant US trading relationships worldwide, particularly with nations like India and China, which are among Iran's primary trading partners.
"Effective immediately, any country doing business with the Islamic Republic of Iran will incur a 25% tariff on all transactions with the United States. This order is final and definitive," Trump stated on Truth Social.
This tariff declaration coincides with Trump's considerations of potential military measures against Iran due to the ongoing protests.
