Tamil Nadu Minister Aadhav Arjuna on Wednesday moved to clarify the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government's position on the AIADMK rebel faction led by C.Ve. Shanmugam, amid intensifying speculation that the group could be offered Cabinet berths in the state's first government expansion. Arjuna's remarks came as political circles in Chennai closely tracked the anticipated reshuffle, expected as early as this week.

Background: The New Government and Its First Expansion

Following the Assembly election in which TVK emerged as the single-largest party, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay was sworn in on 10 May alongside nine ministers. With portfolios allocated, attention has now turned to the first Cabinet expansion. Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, who arrived in Chennai, is reportedly expected to meet Chief Minister Vijay and senior officials to discuss the expansion process.

Wider Alliance Representation on the Agenda

Addressing reporters in Chennai, Minister Arjuna said TVK favours broader political representation and revealed that Chief Minister Vijay intends to bring like-minded parties together under a common platform. He confirmed that an invitation had been extended to VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan to participate in the government, and stressed that Congress, Left parties, and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) should also find representation in the administration. Political observers note that the number of Congress inductees is among the most closely watched variables in the expansion.

'Rahul Gandhi, Thirumavalavan and Left leaders stood together to protect constitutional values. That spirit of unity should continue,' Arjuna said.

Turning to the AIADMK situation, Arjuna acknowledged that the party had undergone a significant political transformation following the election. He argued that a section within the AIADMK had grown dissatisfied with the party's direction and alleged it had drifted from its founding principles.

Referring specifically to the C.Ve. Shanmugam camp, Arjuna said the faction had made clear that its objective was not to seek power or ministerial positions, but to protect the legacy of former leaders M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and J. Jayalalithaa and to revive the party from within. He added that C.Ve. Shanmugam would announce his future course of action shortly.

'Vijay has immense respect for MGR. We view AIADMK with friendship and goodwill. This is not merely about political support; it is about maintaining cordial relations,' Arjuna said.
