Karur, Sep 30 (NationPress) The investigation into the devastating stampede at actor-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur has taken a serious turn with the arrest of yet another prominent party member. Police apprehended Ponraj, the Central City Secretary of TVK, just a day following the arrest of Mathiazhagan, who serves as the party's West District Secretary.

These arrests are part of a thorough investigation aimed at determining whether inadequate crowd management and permission protocols contributed to the tragic event, which resulted in 41 fatalities.

The stampede transpired as thousands gathered to listen to Vijay speak at Velayuthampalayam, following his roadshow in Namakkal earlier that day.

Eyewitnesses reported that the venue quickly became overcrowded and panic ensued when the electricity went out during the event. The ensuing chaos led to many being trampled, including women and children.

Despite the quick response from police and medical teams, over 60 individuals sustained injuries, and 41 lives were lost.

Previously, Karur Police had lodged complaints against TVK General Secretary N. Anand, Joint General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar, and Mathiazhagan under five sections of the Indian Penal Code, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and defiance of public orders.

Initially, DSP Selvaraj was designated as the investigating officer, but was later replaced by Additional SP Premanand leading the investigation.

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his profound sorrow over the incident and assured full support to the families of the victims. “This tragedy is unbearable. We have initiated a judicial inquiry led by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan and will develop safety protocols for public gatherings after consultations with all stakeholders,” he stated, urging the public to refrain from spreading rumors. AIADMK General Secretary and Opposition Leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticized the DMK government for its failure to guarantee basic safety, emphasizing that accountability is essential.

“The administration disregarded warnings regarding overcrowding. Immediate action is necessary to prevent future tragedies,” he insisted.

TVK founder Vijay, visibly affected, declared a compensation of Rs 20 lakh for each affected family and appealed for peace among his supporters. “This is a heartbreaking moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims. We will fully cooperate with the investigation,” he reassured.

With Ponraj's arrest, law enforcement has indicated a more in-depth examination of potential failures in event management and negligence within the TVK's organizational framework, as public and political pressure for justice continues to mount.
