Bhopal, Sep 30 (NationPress) BJP MLA Rameshwar Sharma announced on Tuesday that madrasas that promote religious conversions will be prohibited from operating in Madhya Pradesh. He stated that these institutions will face closure, and District Collectors have been given strict directives to take prompt action.
This declaration comes in light of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) launching an investigation into claims of an unlawful conversion racket allegedly functioning through unauthorized madrasas across several districts in the state. The racket purportedly targets Hindu children, enrolling them in madrasas with the aim of converting them to Islam.
In an interview with IANS, Rameshwar Sharma remarked, “The NHRC has acknowledged the issue. Stringent measures will be enforced against madrasas that facilitate religious conversions. Mullahs and Maulvis implicated in this matter will also be held accountable. The conversion of children will be met with zero tolerance. The government has issued unequivocal orders to officials for prompt action. The perpetrators will not evade justice.”
He further accused certain Maulanas of attempting to convert non-Muslims by teaching them Urdu, but stressed that “no individual in Madhya Pradesh can thrive through such tactics.”
In response to the complaint, the NHRC has reached out to the Principal Secretary of Madhya Pradesh’s School Education Department, initiating an inquiry into the allegations and requesting an Action Taken Report (ATR) within 15 days. Authorities have also been instructed to send a copy of the report to the Commission via email.
The complaint, dated September 26, alleged that a systematic illegal conversion racket is operating in various districts of Madhya Pradesh, targeting 556 Hindu children across 27 unauthorized madrasas for conversion to Islam.
In the meantime, the first five-and-a-half years of Madhya Pradesh's tough anti-religious conversion law, referred to in political discussions as the 'Love Jihad' law, present a narrative that deviates significantly from its proclaimed objective.
The Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Ordinance, implemented in January 2020, and its successor, the Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Act, 2021, pledged unwavering action against religious conversions executed through coercion, deceit, or marriage.
