Hyderabad, Jan 14 (NationPress) The police of Telangana apprehended two journalists from the Telugu news channel NTV on Wednesday, in connection with the broadcast of a purportedly defamatory report involving a minister and a female IAS officer.
The Commissioner of Police, C. V. Sajjanar, stated that one reporter, who attempted to flee to Bangkok, was captured. Another journalist, who had turned off his phone following a police summons, was also detained.
Sajjanar, who is leading the Special Investigation Team (SIT) looking into the matter, urged that the journalists under investigation should assist the police during the inquiry. He emphasized that all suspects, regardless of their location, will face arrest.
The Commissioner insisted that individuals called for questioning must comply. He noted that the CEO of a TV channel failed to appear for questioning despite being summoned.
He expressed concern over the reporters' attempts to evade the authorities. One reporter had even booked a flight to Bangkok before being apprehended, while another was arrested for ignoring the police's call.
Sajjanar affirmed that the police actions are lawful and that further details will be disclosed shortly. “Justice will prevail,” he stated.
While public criticism is typical, he asserted that there is no justification for broadcasting a fabricated story that attacks a woman officer personally.
The SIT is investigating two distinct cases. The second case involves accusations in Narayanpet district regarding the dissemination of an “obscene and humiliating” image of the Chief Minister in a WhatsApp group.
Hyderabad Police have initiated a case against several media outlets and social media platforms for allegedly distributing false information regarding a minister and a female IAS officer.
NTV's input editor Donthu Ramesh and reporter Sudheer were taken to King Koti Hospital in the evening for a medical examination and are expected to be presented before a magistrate.
Meanwhile, the SIT executed a search operation at the NTV office, reportedly confiscating computers and hard drives after a two-hour search. The channel accused the police of overreaching in their conduct.
The case was filed against NTV, T News, and other media channels, as well as various YouTube channels and social media accounts, following a complaint from Jayesh Ranjan, representing the IAS Officers’ Association.
Jayesh Ranjan, who serves as Secretary of the Telangana IAS Officers’ Association, claimed that on January 8, NTV aired a news story about a female IAS officer that was “entirely false, fabricated, and unfounded.”
The complaint indicated that baseless allegations were directed at a serving female IAS officer, insinuating an inappropriate personal relationship with a political figure and attempting to connect her official duties to these unfounded claims.
