Latehar (Jharkhand), April 15 (NationPress) Two hardcore Maoists associated with the outlawed CPI-Maoist surrendered to police and security personnel in Jharkhand's Latehar district on Tuesday, according to official reports.
The individuals who surrendered have been named as Amarjeet Birjia and Mithilesh Korba, both hailing from Balrampur district in the adjacent state of Chhattisgarh.
Police officials stated that the pair were actively engaged in Maoist operations within the Latehar area and were recognized as significant members of the faction led by infamous Maoist commander Chhotu Kharwar.
The surrender event was witnessed by Latehar Superintendent of Police Kumar Gaurav and CRPF Commandant Yadaram Bunkar, who embraced the rebels back into mainstream society by garlanding them.
The SP took this opportunity to deliver a strong message to remaining Maoists still active in the locality, urging them to surrender and reintegrate into society, or face potential arrest or elimination through security measures.
Both Birjia and Korba are wanted in multiple cases, including one lodged at the Chhipadohar police station in Latehar. Their choice to surrender is perceived as a consequence of ongoing pressure from relentless anti-Maoist operations.
In recent months, more than 50 Maoists have been killed during confrontations with security forces in Chhattisgarh alone. The intensified offensive seems to be exerting psychological pressure, leading several cadres to relinquish their arms.
Just a day prior, Jharkhand DGP Anurag Gupta, while assessing anti-Maoist operations in Chaibasa, emphasized that the days of Maoists in the state are numbered. 'Their end is imminent, and Jharkhand will soon be liberated from the Maoist threat,' he stated.
According to police records, 13 prominent Maoist leaders are currently listed as most-wanted by the Jharkhand Police. This includes three key operatives: Misir Besra, Patiram Manjhi, and Asim Mandal, each with a bounty of Rs 1 crore.
Other infamous figures on the wanted list include Anmol, Mochhu, Ajay Mahato, Sagen Angaria, Ashwin, Pintu Lohra, Chandan Lohra, Amit Hansda alias Uptan, Jaikant, and Rapa Munda.
The Centre has also adopted a decisive approach regarding this issue. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completely eradicate the Maoist threat by March 31, 2026.
Security forces throughout affected regions like Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh have intensified their coordinated efforts, maintaining pressure on the insurgents.
