Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister and National People's Party (NPP) State President Prestone Tynsong has sharpened his campaign rhetoric ahead of the Shillong Lok Sabha bypoll, accusing the Opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) of leveraging social media misinformation to win elections and challenging it to account for its governance record in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

Key Allegations at Wahlyngkhat Campaign Rally

Addressing an election meeting at Wahlyngkhat village under Pynursla Block on Monday, Tynsong said the NPP had reflected carefully on its back-to-back defeats — the 2024 Lok Sabha election and the 2025 Autonomous District Council polls — and identified social media influence as a significant contributing factor. He alleged that false and misleading narratives circulated online had swayed voters, enabling parties to secure mandates without a factual basis for their claims.

Directly targeting the VPP, which currently controls the KHADC, Tynsong demanded a public accounting of what the party had delivered since receiving its mandate. 'I want that such people should give an answer in front of us, the public. The public has given you the mandate to govern in the district council. What is the change?' he said.

Land Act Controversy and Traditional Institutions

Tynsong also trained his fire on the VPP over its attempt to amend the Land Act, a move that was reportedly returned by Governor Chandrashekhar H. Vijayashankar. He alleged that the proposed amendments could have undermined the traditional authority and roles of institutions such as the Dorbar Shnong, Dorbar Raid, and Dorbar Hima — bodies that hold deep cultural and administrative significance in Khasi society.

Why the Bypoll Seat Fell Vacant

The Shillong parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of sitting VPP Member of Parliament Ricky Andrew Jones Syngkon on 19 February 2026, who suffered a cardiac arrest while playing futsal in Shillong. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has not yet announced a polling schedule, with the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Meghalaya cited as one of the factors behind the delay.

Candidates in the Frame

The NPP has fielded D.R.L. Nonglait, President of the Khasi Authors' Society and a professor at North-Eastern Hill University, whose candidature was formally announced in May 2026. The VPP has nominated Batskhem Myrboh, also an academic, setting up an unusual contest between two scholars. Candidates from other major political parties are also expected to enter the fray.

Tynsong urged voters to evaluate parties on their actual development record rather than on social media narratives, framing the bypoll as a referendum on governance versus messaging.
