DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday, 3 August led a large-scale demonstration in Thanjavur, accusing the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)-led state government of failing to protect Tamil Nadu's interests in the long-running Cauvery water dispute and demanding urgent relief for farmers in the delta region.

Key Demands of the Protest

The DMK-organised demonstration centred on three specific demands: halting Karnataka's proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir project, announcing a full waiver of agricultural loans, and officially declaring the Cauvery delta districts drought-affected given the severity of the ongoing water shortage.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition K.N. Nehru, senior DMK functionaries, alliance party leaders, and a large number of party workers participated in the protest, underscoring the Opposition's unified stance on the issue.

Udhayanidhi's Criticism of the State Government

Addressing party workers and farmers, Udhayanidhi pointed to the unusually low water levels observed during the recent Aadi Perukku festival — traditionally a celebration of the river's abundance — as evidence of the gravity of the crisis. He said the dry riverbed was a stark indicator of the water emergency confronting the state.

He alleged that the state government's inadequate response had left farmers facing an uncertain agricultural season, claiming that many cultivators had already lost the kuruvai crop due to insufficient water availability. He also warned that the upcoming samba and thaladi cultivation seasons were at risk if adequate Cauvery water was not secured in the coming weeks.

Sharp Attack on the TVK Cabinet

Udhayanidhi launched a pointed attack on the administration of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, describing the government as 'incompetent and incapable' of handling the inter-state river dispute. He alleged that the government had failed to take decisive steps to secure Tamil Nadu's rightful share of Cauvery water.

He also targeted individual Cabinet members. Water Resources Minister N. Anand was accused of avoiding media interaction during the ongoing crisis. Agriculture Minister R. Vinoth was criticised for allegedly taking the Agriculture Budget documents to the Tirupati temple to seek divine blessings rather than addressing the farming community's challenges. Udhayanidhi further remarked that individuals with 'questionable backgrounds' had been appointed as Ministers, describing the Cabinet as being 'full of clowns.'

Background and Wider Context

The Cauvery water dispute is one of India's oldest inter-state river conflicts, primarily between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. The proposed Mekedatu project — a balancing reservoir at the confluence of the Cauvery and Arkavathi rivers — has long been opposed by Tamil Nadu on grounds that it would reduce downstream water flows. This protest marks one of the most significant Opposition mobilisations on the issue since the TVK government assumed office.

With the delta region's farming calendar under pressure and no immediate resolution in sight, the political temperature around the Cauvery dispute is expected to remain elevated in the weeks ahead.
