Ujjain/Badnagar, April 10 (NationPress) In a tragic end to a prolonged rescue mission spanning nearly 22 hours, three-year-old Bhagirath Dewasi passed away after tumbling into an open borehole in Jhalariya village within Badnagar tehsil, located around 75 km from Ujjain city.

The young boy, the youngest of three sons born to shepherd Praveen Dewasi from Gudanla village in Pali district, Rajasthan, fell into the borewell on Thursday evening, approximately between 7:30 and 8:00 PM.

“The boy is dead,” stated a government official. The family had only been in the area for three days to graze their sheep.

Family members reported that a sheep inadvertently knocked off the stone covering the borehole. Curious little Bhagirath approached the site, lifted the cover to look inside, and fell into the shaft.

His mother, who was nearby, witnessed the horrifying moment but was unable to reach him in time.

A large-scale coordinated rescue operation was swiftly initiated, involving the National Disaster Response Force team from Bhopal and units from the State Disaster Response Force based in Harda, Indore, and Ujjain.

The child was trapped at a depth of about 70 feet (some reports indicated as deep as 75 feet).

Rescue teams monitored him continuously using a camera lowered into the borewell and initially provided oxygen to maintain his stability.

Efforts were ongoing around the clock, digging a parallel pit with multiple Poclain and earth excavators. Progress significantly slowed after reaching around 40 feet due to hard rock formations.

A hammer machine was urgently dispatched from Bhopal and Indore to break through these obstacles.

Teams also attempted to attach a rescue ring and rope to safely extract the child.

Ujjain Superintendent of Police Pradeep Sharma, who was present at the scene, previously stated, “Every possible effort is being made to bring the child out safely.”

Despite the relentless efforts of over a dozen heavy machines and specialized rescue personnel, the operation ended in tragedy on Friday when Bhagirath was pronounced dead.

The precise circumstances and timing of his death are still under investigation, but the extended entrapment and challenging rocky terrain proved to be too difficult to overcome.

This incident has deeply impacted the village and the shepherd community. Borehole accidents involving children remain a significant concern in rural India, often caused by uncovered or inadequately protected shafts in agricultural areas.

This tragedy underscores the urgent necessity for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, which should include mandatory borehole coverings and regular inspections in grazing and farming regions.
