An official from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) disclosed that an amount of Rs 4,12,500 has been allocated as the first installment, with the cheque already dispatched to the family of the victim.
This financial aid has been sanctioned under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, and the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955, the official further mentioned.
As per officials and family members, the 24-year-old final-year MBA student at a Uttarakhand university, who was the son of a Border Security Force (BSF) constable, succumbed to his injuries on December 26 at a hospital in Dehradun.
Angel, belonging to the Chakma tribal community, suffered severe injuries after being assaulted by a group of assailants on December 9, during which racial insults were reportedly hurled.
According to the CMO official, after the instructions from Chief Minister Dhami, the case was forwarded through the Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, to the District Social Welfare Officer for prompt approval of relief for the victim’s family.
Based on a joint inquiry report submitted by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Vikasnagar, and the Deputy Superintendent of Police, the district committee accelerated the approval process, leading to the sanctioning of assistance. Consequently, the cheque for the initial installment was sent to Tarun Prasad Chakma.
In a related development, Chief Minister Dhami communicated with Tarun Prasad Chakma over the phone, expressing profound sorrow regarding the death of Angel Chakma.
The Chief Minister informed him that five suspects have already been apprehended, and efforts are ongoing to capture another suspect, for whom a reward has been announced.
Reassuring the bereaved family of comprehensive support, Dhami expressed personal sadness over the incident and acknowledged the family's grief. He asserted that the Uttarakhand government would ensure rigorous punishment for the offenders.
Moreover, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha spoke with his Uttarakhand counterpart regarding the incident on Saturday. Dhami informed Saha that five suspects have been arrested and placed in judicial custody, with the investigation continuing.
