Union Home Minister Amit Shah and DoNER Minister to Participate in NEC Meeting in Agartala

Agartala, Dec 5 (NationPress) The three-day plenary session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), which acts as a regional planning body for the eight states of the area, is set to occur in Agartala from December 20, officials announced on Thursday.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, various other concerned union ministers, and senior officials from both the Central government and the eight northeastern states will participate in the NEC meeting in Agartala from December 20-22.

The NEC plenary session was initially scheduled for August 31 and September 1 but was delayed due to severe floods that affected Tripura.

An official from the Tripura Planning Department mentioned that the meeting will address the progress of various ongoing and proposed development initiatives, issues related to the India-Bangladesh border, and other significant topics, with the Governors and Chief Ministers of all eight northeastern states and senior officials from the NEC and DoNER Ministry in attendance.

In the prior NEC meeting held in Shillong, the Union Home Minister remarked that in the 50 years since its inception, the NEC has accelerated the development of the region by providing a policy-related platform for all states and streamlining solutions to their challenges.

He noted that during these 50 years, over 12,000 km of roads have been constructed, 700 MW power plants have been established, and numerous institutes of national excellence have been created with the guidance of the NEC.

Emphasizing the role and vision of the NEC under the Act East Policy, the Home Minister stated that the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made significant strides in addressing issues related to law and order, insurgency, and border management in the region.

The catastrophic floods in Tripura have resulted in the deaths of at least 40 individuals, including women and children, with many others injured from landslides and drowning across six districts.

The Tripura government has sought approximately Rs 15,000 crore in aid following the unprecedented floods and landslides caused by record-breaking rainfall in August, which devastated numerous public and private properties, infrastructure, and agricultural crops.

A state government representative noted that around 1.28 lakh individuals have sought refuge in 558 relief camps throughout all eight districts.

It was reported that approximately 17 lakh people have been impacted by the extensive rain and floods that have plagued the state since August 19.

With its headquarters located in Shillong, Meghalaya, the NEC is a regional planning and statutory advisory body for the eight northeastern states, including Sikkim. It was established under the North Eastern Council Act, 1971, and officially commenced on November 7, 1972.
