Panaji, Oct 9 (NationPress) Acknowledging the significant contributions of sanitation workers towards enhancing Goa's tourism industry, Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Virendra Kumar on Thursday presented them with essential safety gear, including PPE kits and Ayushman cards, as reported by an official statement.

The distribution of these kits was conducted under the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NAMASTE) Scheme during an event in Panaji, according to the official announcement.

The Minister elaborated on the NAMASTE initiative, designed to safeguard the welfare, dignity, and socio-economic upliftment of sanitation workers, as mentioned in the statement.

To date, the profiling of 90,494 Sewer and Septic Tank Workers has been finalized, with 84,077 workers receiving PPE kits and 68,341 being issued Ayushman Cards, he noted.

“On October 2, 2014, during the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Swachh Bharat Mission nationwide. In response to the Prime Minister’s appeal, this campaign rapidly evolved into a grassroots movement, engaging citizens across the country and bringing recognition to the efforts of sanitation workers,” he remarked.

As part of the event, a fashion show was organized by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, showcasing how sanitation workers utilize safety gear, mechanical tools, and PPE kits in their daily tasks.

In Goa, a total of 252 Sewer and Septic Tank Workers (SSWs) have been verified through profiling. During the event, 10 SSWs and 10 Waste Pickers were symbolically awarded PPE kits, and 10 sanitation workers received Ayushman Cards, per the statement.

Furthermore, safety equipment was distributed, and to highlight the significance of PPE kits, an engaging costume-based fashion show was held, according to the statement.
