Lucknow, Aug 12 (NationPress) A political uproar has emerged in Uttar Pradesh following the vandalism of a tomb located outside the Fatehpur mausoleum. Tensions escalated in Fatehpur on Monday when a centuries-old tomb was damaged by a group claiming it was built over a demolished Hindu temple.
The incident, which involves the tomb of Nawab Abu Samad, has sparked a fierce political debate and led authorities to deploy substantial police and Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) forces in the area.
To prevent further disturbances, barricades have been erected around the contentious site.
A video circulating on social media reportedly shows members of Hindu organizations damaging parts of the mausoleum and raising saffron flags atop it. These visuals have prompted strong reactions from the local Muslim community and the Opposition, accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of inciting communal discord.
In a subtle critique of the BJP, Congress MP Imran Masood stated to IANS, "This reflects their agenda, and they are actively pursuing it. If someone from the opposing side is involved, they face severe consequences, but if it’s their own, they are handled with diplomacy."
"Individuals are vandalizing sacred sites while the police merely stand by, facilitating their exit. The animosity they are fostering will be difficult to eradicate," he added.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati called for decisive action from the state government.
On social media platform X, she expressed, "In the ongoing dispute in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur district involving the mausoleum and temple, the government must prevent any community from taking actions that could escalate communal tensions or disrupt brotherhood. This matter requires serious attention and, if necessary, strict measures."
Leaders from the Samajwadi Party (SP) also criticized the ruling party, alleging that the attack was a deliberate scheme to provoke communal unrest.
SP MLA Atul Pradhan remarked to IANS, "The BJP is orchestrating communal tensions in Fatehpur, aiming to induce chaos."
Kanpur SP MLA Mohammad Hassan Roomi claimed that a "land mafia" is leveraging the BJP's agenda to seize property and demanded an investigation into the involvement of BJP members.
Earlier on Monday, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP of engaging in divisive politics, stating, "The BJP thrives on a divided society filled with hatred. They are following an ideology rooted in colonialism."
He also recalled previous communal incidents in Fatehpur, including the demolition of a mosque deemed "illegal" and a case in which a youth was killed, with action taken only after public outcry.
