Chaos Erupts on Final Day of Bihar Budget Session; SDRF Expansion in Focus
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Feb 27 (NationPress) The concluding day of the Bihar Legislative Assembly's Budget Session was marked by significant turmoil in both Houses on Friday. Numerous pressing issues were brought to the forefront, yet members of the ruling coalition were seen critiquing their own government on various matters, with the expansion of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) taking the spotlight.
During the intense discussions, a pivotal topic concerning disaster management emerged, with lawmakers advocating for the deployment of SDRF teams at the subdivision level.
Addressing the Assembly, Begusarai MLA Kundan Kumar pointed out that 2,547 individuals lost their lives due to drowning incidents in 2024–25.
He inquired whether SDRF units could be stationed at the subdivision level instead of being restricted to district headquarters and whether the force would be bolstered with enhanced resources.
Other MLAs, including those from Sitamarhi and Chhatapur, rallied behind this demand.
They contended that the absence of SDRF teams at the grassroots level, coupled with insufficient resources, often hampers timely relief efforts, leading to increased casualties.
In response to these concerns, Water Resource and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary informed the House that the SDRF was established under the vision of the current government, and an expansion initiative is actively in progress.
He mentioned that the SDRF headquarters has been established in Bihta, Patna, and that personnel are undergoing both national and international training.
The government plans to gradually extend the SDRF's reach to the subdivision level to ensure swifter responses during emergencies.
The minister assured members that the government's goal is to deliver prompt and effective disaster response, thus minimizing loss of life and property.
This issue is poised to remain a focal point of discussion as the government advances plans to enhance disaster management infrastructure across the state.
