Hyderabad, Jan 22 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Telangana, A. Revanth Reddy, stated on Wednesday that enhancing urban mobility is a significant priority for the state government, which aims to expand the Hyderabad Metro Rail, construct a new Regional Ring Road, and establish a Ring Rail.
While speaking at the roundtable on urban mobility during the WEF CII conference in Davos, he highlighted four essential aspects: infrastructure, accessibility, inclusivity, and sustainability. The Chief Minister called for innovative solutions to efficiently move over 40 million residents across Telangana in an eco-friendly manner and at minimal costs.
“To foresee the future of any city over the next 10, 20, 30, or 50 years, one must evaluate the time and cost required to transport a person or an object over a distance. Cities that manage to keep the costs and duration of moving people and goods low will ultimately thrive and secure a prosperous future,” he remarked.
Emphasizing that urban mobility is integral to urban growth and prospects, he conveyed, “The advancement of nations is tied to the development of cities. Thus, urban mobility, coupled with sustainability and environmental considerations, will shape the fate of humanity.”
Reflecting on his experience in Switzerland, he shared how he enjoyed a scenic train ride from Zurich to Davos.
“The challenges I face at home are somewhat more intricate. My capital city, Hyderabad, has a population exceeding 12 million and is rapidly increasing. For me, urban mobility involves connecting individuals within my city as well as linking my city to surrounding towns and villages throughout the state,” CM Reddy explained.
The Chief Minister further noted that his administration is expanding the Hyderabad Metro with new lines, aiming for over 100 km, which is more than double the current capacity. Hyderabad is also served by a 160-km-long Outer Ring Road.
“Currently, I am developing a Regional Ring Road of nearly 360 km to link all major towns and villages. Additionally, I plan to construct a Regional Ring Railway around the Ring Road. Consequently, our residents will benefit from two circles of roads and two circles of railways. Furthermore, we will establish Radial Roads that connect these Rings,” he asserted.
Stressing that Telangana is a land-locked state, he indicated that the government is constructing a significant dry port to transform the region into a supply chain and warehousing center.
“We are also establishing a direct link from this dry port to the nearest port, Machilipatnam port, via a dedicated highway and railway connection,” he added.
The Chief Minister disclosed that the state government is transitioning 3,000 public buses currently operating on petrol and diesel to electric options. Emphasizing that electric vehicles are a major focus for his administration, he noted that all road tax and registration fees for EVs have been waived. Telangana boasts the highest growth in EV sales across India.
“We are also developing a new Future City, aimed at achieving net-zero emissions. We aspire to offer the world's finest mobility solutions in this city,” he concluded.
