Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Sunday, 30 August inaugurated the Aranmula Uthrittathi Vallamkali on the Pamba river in Keralam, asserting that tradition and modernity are not in conflict but can advance together. The ceremonial snake-boat race, held as part of the Onam festivities, drew senior political figures and thousands of spectators to the banks of the sacred river.

Key Highlights of the Inauguration

Invoking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi' (development alongside heritage), the Vice-President underscored India's cultural plurality as a unifying force. 'Our diversity is not a source of division; it is a source of our strength,' he said.

Radhakrishnan described Aranmula as a symbol of Keralam's rich cultural heritage, devotion, and timeless traditions. In a post on social media platform X, he noted that the Aranmula Vallamkali, associated with Onam and the sacred tradition of Vallasadya, 'showcases teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship, with beautifully decorated Palliyodams and more than a hundred oarsmen rowing in perfect rhythm.'

Cultural Significance and the Keralam Renaming

The Vice-President observed that the boat race draws participants from the diaspora — people working abroad who return specifically to take part in such cherished traditions. He said Aranmula demonstrates how cultural practices continue to connect communities with their roots across generations.

Radhakrishnan also congratulated the people of Keralam on the state's recent official renaming, noting that, in his capacity as Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, he had presided over the passage of the State Renaming Bill during the recently concluded Parliament session. He extended greetings on the occasion of Onam.

Spiritual Significance of the Pamba River

Highlighting the religious importance of the Pamba river, the Vice-President said it forms an integral part of the Sabarimala pilgrimage, representing faith, purification, and spiritual surrender. He shared that he has undertaken seven pilgrimages to Sabarimala, and considers his first visit — made shortly before his nomination as a Member of Parliament — particularly significant, believing that Lord Ayyappa's blessings contributed to his subsequent electoral victory.

The Aranmula Vallamkali remains one of the oldest and most revered river festivals in India, and this year's edition — held under the renewed identity of Keralam — carries added symbolic weight as the state celebrates its cultural legacy alongside its constitutional renaming.
