Dahod, Feb 14 (NationPress) In anticipation of the local body elections, authorities seized a vehicle on Friday that was transporting ₹1.38 crore in cash and 108 kilograms of silver in Gujarat's Dahod, as reported by officials.

The local body elections are scheduled for February 16 and will involve various municipal corporations, municipalities, and panchayats.

To ensure a smooth electoral process, security measures have been intensified. The Dahod police intercepted a courier vehicle carrying cash and silver.

The vehicle, registered in Uttar Pradesh and identified as belonging to Ojas Speed Courier Company, was traveling from Jhansi to Rajkot. An inspection at the Khangela outpost located on the Gujarat-Madhya Pradesh border revealed 108 kilograms of silver bricks hidden under the driver's seat, along with ₹1.38 crore in cash. The total value of the confiscated items is estimated at approximately ₹2.19 crore.

Three individuals from Jhansi -- driver Virendrakumar Sharma, Manishkumar Gupta, and Raju Patel -- have been taken into custody regarding this matter. Investigations are underway to assess any possible connections to the upcoming elections or unlawful activities.

The State Election Commission has announced that voting will occur for the Junagadh Municipal Corporation, along with 66 municipalities and three taluka panchayats. Furthermore, by-elections are set for three vacant seats in municipal corporations, 21 seats in municipalities, nine seats in district panchayats, and 91 seats in taluka panchayats, with vote counting scheduled for February 18.

In preparation for these elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been diligently finalizing its candidate list. A two-day meeting of the state parliamentary board was conducted to strategize and select appropriate candidates for the upcoming elections. The BJP has secured 215 seats and four municipalities uncontested in these local body elections.

The State Election Commission has established a 27 percent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in these elections, following the Gujarat government's endorsement in August 2023 based on the recommendations of the Justice Jhaveri Commission. This decision is in accordance with the Supreme Court's directive that OBC reservations in local bodies be based on population data.
