Veteran Congress Leader EVKS Elangovan Dies in Chennai

Chennai, Dec 14 (NationPress) Veteran Congress leader and Erode East MLA, EVKS Elangovan (75), has sadly passed away on Saturday. He had been under treatment at a private hospital in Chennai for the last two weeks.
The Tamil Nadu Congress revealed that Elangovan was hospitalized due to a lung-related ailment.
The legislator, representing the Erode East constituency, had been in poor health for over a month, leading to his admission on November 11. The party stated that EVKS Elangovan was receiving intensive care for more than two weeks.
“Despite the medical team's best efforts, he passed away today,” the hospital reported.
A former President of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC), Elangovan was a veteran politician and a prominent figure in both state and national politics.
He previously held the Gobichettipalayam Lok Sabha seat in Tamil Nadu and served as the Union Minister of Textiles from 2004 to 2009 during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s administration.
In the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, he faced defeat against A. Ganeshamoorthy in the Erode constituency.
In 2019, he ran for the Theni Lok Sabha seat but was defeated by O.P. Ravindranath Kumar.
Additionally, Elangovan served as an MLA for the Sathyamangalam constituency back in 1984.
More recently, he won the Erode East Assembly seat in the 2023 bye-elections, following the untimely passing of his son, Thirumagan Evera, who had previously won the seat in 2021.
Born on December 21, 1948, in the Erode district, Elangovan was the son of E.V.K. Sampath and the grandson of Krishnasamy, who was the brother of social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy.
His political journey was deeply embedded in the Dravidian and Congress traditions of Tamil Nadu.
The veteran leader leaves a rich legacy of political service and considerable contributions to both Tamil Nadu and Indian politics.
In the wake of his passing, Congress officials have been visiting the hospital where he was being treated.
To ensure public order, police personnel have been stationed around the hospital.
