New Delhi, Nov 9 (NationPress) Commending the government's initiative in granting Classical Language status to Prakrit, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan attended the commemorative event for Parampujya Acharya Shri 108 Shantisagar Maharaj at Shravanabelagola in Karnataka on Sunday.

During his first visit to the state, the Vice President emphasized the profound historical ties between Tamil Nadu and Jainism while addressing the gathering celebrating the centenary of Acharya Ji’s visit to this sacred site in 1925 for the Mahamastakabhisheka ceremony, as stated in an official release.

Radhakrishnan also recognized the efforts of the Indian Government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in awarding Classical Language status to Prakrit and initiating the Gyan Bharatham Mission to safeguard ancient manuscripts.

Furthermore, he unveiled the statue of Acharya Shri Shantisagar Maharaj Ji at Shravanabelagola.

The Vice President lauded the significant contributions of Acharya Shri Shantisagar Maharaj Ji in revitalizing the Digambara tradition, praising his life as an embodiment of the Jain principles of Ahimsa, Aparigraha, and Anekantavada, which remain vital for promoting inner peace and social harmony.

In today's world, characterized by materialism and unrest, he noted that the life of Acharya Shri Shantisagar Maharaj Ji serves as a reminder that true freedom resides not in possessions, but in self-restraint — not in indulgence, but in achieving inner peace.

Through this centenary celebration, the Digambara Jain Mutt at Shravanabelagola has honored a great saint's memory while rekindling a crucial spiritual flame for future generations.

He expressed hope that the newly unveiled statue would symbolize the power of simplicity, purity, and compassion for every visitor.

Radhakrishnan expressed the hope that the teachings of Acharya Shri Shantisagar Maharaj Ji would inspire all Indians to pursue the path of righteousness, tolerance, and peace.

Recalling the illustrious past of Shravanabelagola as a pivotal center of Jain faith for over two millennia, the Vice President highlighted the impressive 57-foot monolithic statue of Lord Bahubali, commissioned by Ganga dynasty minister Chavundaraya, as a lasting testament to spiritual devotion and artistic mastery.

Radhakrishnan also mentioned Emperor Chandragupta Maurya’s renunciation at Shravanabelagola under the guidance of Jain saint Acharya Bhadrabahu, noting that this act symbolized the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment, even after achieving worldly success.
