Is a Complaint Against Vijay and Velmurugan Valid Over 'Mockery' of Murugan Song?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Feb 3 (NationPress) A police complaint has been lodged against actor-politician Vijay and folk singer Velmurugan, asserting that a sacred song dedicated to Lord Murugan was ridiculed and misrepresented during the third anniversary festivities of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on February 2.
Advocate Kutrala Nathan submitted the complaint to the Nellai Municipal Police, urging legal action against Velmurugan for allegedly changing the lyrics of the well-known Murugan devotional song Maruthamalai Mamaniye during his act at the TVK anniversary event at the party’s Panaiyur office in Chennai.
The complaint also implicates Vijay, TVK general secretary N. Anand, and party member Aadhav Arjuna, accusing them of either being responsible for or complicit in the contentious performance.
According to the complainant, Velmurugan substituted the traditional lyric 'Varuvai Kuganey' with politically charged phrases extolling Vijay and TVK.
The altered performance, the advocate contended, has significantly offended the religious feelings of Murugan devotees and amounted to the desecration of a sacred hymn.
The complaint further claimed that the song was performed with a political agenda, thus intertwining religious devotion with partisan propaganda.
It stated that such actions could incite communal discord, upset religious adherents, and lead to potential law and order disturbances.
It also criticizes the event organizers for permitting a devotional song to be utilized in a manner that allegedly mocks faith and incites religious sentiments.
"As devotees of Murugan, we are profoundly distressed by the alteration of a cherished hymn for political acclaim," the advocate expressed in his complaint.
Vijay inaugurated TVK on February 2, 2024. Since then, the actor has actively engaged in Tamil Nadu politics and initiated his first Assembly election campaign from Tiruchirappalli.
After a prior controversy during a TVK public meeting in Karur, Vijay temporarily halted his campaign before resuming his political endeavors.
The third anniversary event featured a musical performance by Velmurugan, during which Vijay was seen joyfully dancing, visuals of which spread widely on social media.
This performance has now provoked backlash and legal action from segments of Murugan devotees.
As of now, police officials have not confirmed if a case has been officially registered. No formal response has been provided by Vijay, Velmurugan, or the TVK leadership regarding the complaint.
