Chennai, Dec 3 (NationPress) The leader of Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam, Vijay, has placed the onus of severe waterlogging and widespread disruption on the state government due to the relentless heavy rain affecting Chennai and multiple districts.
In a pointed statement shared on social media on Wednesday, Vijay criticized the government's "incomplete and ineffective drainage projects over the past four-and-a-half years", which he claims have led to unnecessary distress for millions.
Worried about the consequences of the ongoing downpour, Vijay highlighted that the normal functioning of life in various areas of Tamil Nadu has been significantly impacted.
He remarked, "The ongoing rains across Chennai and nearby areas have drastically disrupted the everyday lives of the common populace. The core issue lies in the government's inability to complete the drainage systems efficiently."
Vijay pointed out that despite funds being allocated for stormwater drain initiatives, the state has "failed" to produce tangible results.
He further added, "Financial resources were dedicated to enhance rainwater management systems. Yet, after four-and-a-half years, the initiatives remain unfinished. If the government had shown even a modicum of concern for its citizens, such extensive water stagnation wouldn't have occurred after merely a few days of rain."
While urging citizens to exercise caution during the continuing rain, Vijay appealed to everyone to prioritize their safety.
He also directed his party members to provide timely aid to those impacted by flooding.
Vijay stated, "I encourage my party volunteers to offer necessary support to the public in a safe and organized manner."
Moreover, he called upon the state government to take prompt action to mitigate further difficulties during the remaining monsoon season.
"At this juncture, I implore the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate measures to ensure that rainwater is efficiently disposed of, preventing further disruption to the daily lives of the populace," asserted the TVK leader.
His criticism arises at a moment when various districts are facing incessant rainfall linked to a weakened low-pressure system, leading to waterlogging, traffic snarls, and distress for residents.
With forecasts indicating more rain, Vijay's comments increase pressure on the state to expedite stormwater management initiatives and rectify deficiencies in urban drainage systems.
