Chennai, Feb 16 (NationPress) The renowned Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay has vehemently criticized the Central government regarding its approach to the National Education Policy (NEP), specifically the enforcement of the three-language policy.
As the leader of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Vijay condemned this initiative and voiced his discontent over the purported actions taken against the Vikatan website. He labeled these measures as authoritarian and anti-democratic, stressing that the three-language policy threatens the autonomy of states.
“What justification exists for imposing a three-language policy if it merely diminishes state autonomy? This represents a blatant infringement on India’s federal structure,” he articulated.
He further accused the Central government of meddling in regional language policies, describing it as an assault on the rights of citizens and the sovereignty of states.
Vijay also forcefully denounced the alleged blocking of the Vikatan website, a major media outlet in Tamil Nadu.
“The freedom of the press—the fourth pillar of democracy—must be safeguarded at all costs. If there are issues regarding the content produced by a media organization, the proper procedure is to pursue legal action, not to implement draconian measures that stifle free expression,” he asserted.
Expressing suspicion that the Union government might be responsible for the website’s blockade, Vijay cautioned that such actions signify a troubling trend of suppressing dissent and restricting freedom of speech.
“Rather than resorting to authoritarian methods, the government should facilitate dialogue and resolve conflicts through legal channels,” he contended.
Characterizing these events as part of a larger authoritarian movement, Vijay accused the Union government of adopting fascist policies.
“The Centre’s interference in state language policies, its public threats to cut funding for Tamil Nadu, and the blocking of Vikatan’s website all highlight a perilous pattern of undemocratic practices that erode constitutional rights and undermine the pillars of democracy,” he stated.
Reaffirming TVK’s pledge to combat such authoritarian actions, Vijay declared: “TVK will always stand with the people and will fiercely oppose any fascist tendencies, whether they arise from the Union government or the state government.”
He pledged that his party would consistently resist any attempts to curtail democratic rights and would remain a strong proponent of protecting people’s rights.
Meanwhile, TVK is preparing to hold its inaugural general council meeting in Mahabalipuram on February 26, marking a significant milestone since the party was established on February 2, 2024.
Vijay’s foray into politics has transformed Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Upon launching TVK, he positioned the party against corruption and divisive politics. Although TVK has declared its intention to contest the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, it has opted to abstain from the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and has not allied with any party.
Vijay has been explicit about his political stance, identifying the BJP as his ideological rival and the DMK as his political competitor. He has charged the DMK with being a family-run party that exploits Dravidian identity for personal gain while criticizing the BJP for fostering divisive politics.
