Karnataka BJP chief Vijayendra plays down CM talk, targets Congress ahead of graduates' poll
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Karnataka Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra on Wednesday dismissed speculation about his potential elevation as Chief Minister, saying the more pressing concern is public anger against what he called the Congress government's alleged corruption and anti-people policies. His remarks came at a preparatory meeting in Bengaluru for the upcoming South-East Graduates' Constituency election to the Karnataka Legislative Council.
Vijayendra's Message to the Party
Responding to statements by BJP MLA M. Chandrappa (referred to as Chandranna) projecting him as a future Chief Minister, Vijayendra urged party leaders to stay focused on the broader political mission. 'Chandranna's remarks describing me as a future Chief Minister were made with affection and confidence. But I would like to offer a word of advice as the State BJP President. The question of who becomes Chief Minister is not important,' he said.
He stressed that what truly matters is that the people of Karnataka are, in his words, 'frustrated with this corrupt, anti-people and anti-Hindu Congress government.' He also alleged that the ruling government had 'looted funds meant for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes,' a charge the Congress has not publicly addressed in this context. 'Therefore, the responsibility on all of us has increased,' Vijayendra added.
Focus on the Graduates' Constituency Election
Vijayendra underscored the significance of the South-East Graduates' Constituency, which the BJP has reportedly held for eight consecutive terms. He said the State Legislature is the 'temple of democracy' and must be represented by capable individuals, not those driven by personal ambition or the belief that money power alone guarantees victory.
The party has fielded K.M. Suresh as the NDA candidate, whom Vijayendra described as an honest worker with decades of service in the education sector. With the number of registered voters expected to cross 50,000, Suresh will need to campaign across five districts and cover all 33 Assembly constituencies under the graduates' constituency.
Warning on Congress's Voter Enrolment Drive
Vijayendra acknowledged a shifting political landscape, noting that the ruling Congress has been actively enrolling voters for several months ahead of the election. 'We still have a few months before the election, and we must accelerate our voter registration and organisational efforts,' he said, calling on leaders from Chitradurga district in particular to take greater responsibility.
He pointed out that the BJP has historically won Graduates' and Teachers' Constituency elections even during periods of Congress rule in the state — but cautioned that complacency could prove costly this time.
Leaders Present at the Meeting
The preparatory meeting was attended by several senior party figures, including district president K.T. Kumaraswamy, former MLAs Tippareddy and Basavaraj, MLA Chandranna, former MLC Shivayogi Swamy, MLCs Keshav Prasad and Naveen, NDA candidate K.M. Suresh, State President of the Kadugolla community Rajanna, and other party functionaries.
With the election approaching and voter registration efforts intensifying on both sides, the South-East Graduates' Constituency contest is shaping up as an early litmus test for Karnataka BJP's organisational strength under Vijayendra's leadership.
