New Delhi, Feb 20 (NationPress) BJP MLA-elect Vijender Gupta has been appointed as the Speaker of the newly formed Delhi Assembly. He confirmed that the CAG report will be presented during the Assembly's inaugural session.
In a special interview with IANS, Gupta stated that the party has selected him for the Speaker position.
"This is a moment of immense joy, as after 27 years, the BJP is once again forming the government in Delhi. We are participating in the oath-taking ceremony today. Congratulations to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta and all the newly appointed ministers. I’ve been designated as the Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. I will ensure that the Assembly operates according to its laws.."
"As soon as I take up the role of Speaker, my priority will be to present the CAG report on the Assembly floor," he added.
Previously, CM-designate Rekha Gupta mentioned that the prior AAP government would be held accountable for corruption allegations. Minister-designate Manjinder Singh Sirsa stated in an exclusive interview with IANS that corruption cases will be unveiled, and those responsible will face imprisonment. "Indeed, the CAG report will be addressed very soon. It will be presented in the first session. Additionally, corruption cases will be revealed, and those involved will be incarcerated..." he asserted.
The CAG report has indicated a substantial revenue loss stemming from discrepancies in the Delhi government's excise policy. The audit, which scrutinizes the liquor policy from 2017 to 2022, highlighted numerous breaches in quality control, licensing, pricing, and systemic enforcement failures, according to various reports. The review spans three years under the previous excise policy and one year under the now-repealed 2021-22 policy.
Gupta affirmed that the Delhi Assembly is a temple of democracy that must adhere to rules and regulations.
"Sheesh Mahal is a troubling character, and therefore the BJP would prefer to avoid it entirely," he stated.
Following the oath-taking of Rekha Gupta and her six ministers, the new Assembly session will commence. A pro-tem Speaker will administer the oath to the 70 newly elected MLAs, after which the official Speaker will be appointed.
Since Vijender Gupta has indicated to IANS that he is the party’s choice to be the Speaker, he will take the oath accordingly and oversee the House.
Ten years ago, Vijender Gupta was forcibly removed from the Delhi Assembly amidst significant uproar following allegedly derogatory comments made by party associate O.P. Sharma against then-AAP MLA Alka Lamba. Footage from within the Assembly depicted Gupta being carried out by several marshals, as he clung tightly to the furniture, resisting expulsion. Gupta has previously served as the Leader of the Opposition.
