Puducherry, June 30 (NationPress) Industrialist-turned-politician V.P. Ramalingam will officially be introduced as the new president of the BJP's Puducherry state unit on Monday.
Ramalingam, who stepped down as a nominated MLA on Friday, was the only candidate to submit nomination papers on Sunday, paving the way for his unopposed election.
M.K. Akhilan, the BJP’s Puducherry state returning officer, confirmed that Ramalingam’s nomination was accepted after thorough scrutiny. The formal announcement will occur during a visit from BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Monday.
At 63 years old, Ramalingam serves as the Managing Director of the Sri Sabthagiri Group of Companies. He joined the BJP in 2021 and was later nominated as an MLA following the establishment of the AINRC-BJP coalition government.
His appointment is widely perceived as a recognition of the political loyalty demonstrated by his elder brother, former Speaker V.P. Sivakozhunthu, a Congress MLA who was instrumental in dissolving the Congress-DMK government prior to the 2021 Assembly elections.
Despite having limited organizational experience, party insiders indicate that he will receive guidance from senior strategists as he prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections.
In parallel, the BJP is also anticipated to secure a cabinet position in the N. Rangasamy-led government. The Chief Minister disclosed to reporters on Sunday that he had recommended a BJP MLA for ministerial induction, though the nominee's name remains undisclosed.
According to party sources, senior BJP leader A. John Kumar is expected to be inducted. A former Congress MLA from the minority Christian community, Kumar switched to the BJP in 2021 and played a key role in fortifying the BJP's presence in Puducherry by helping the party win two Assembly seats in 2021—one for himself and another for his son, Vivilian Richards.
Kumar’s anticipated appointment is viewed as a reward for his contribution in dismantling the prior Congress government and a strategic move to address internal discontent within the BJP. Kumar, along with MLAs P.M.L. Kalyanasundaram, P. Angalan, Gollapalli Srinivas Ashok, and M. Sivakankar, previously formed a dissident bloc advocating for increased representation.
