Is There a War of Words in the TN Assembly Over Rural Jobs Scheme Promises?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Chennai, Jan 22 (NationPress) A fierce political clash unfolded in the Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday during the discussion regarding the motion of gratitude towards the Governor’s address, as the ruling DMK and the opposition AIADMK exchanged accusations concerning the execution and prospects of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
The dispute ignited when AIADMK MLA Thangamani claimed that the Governor’s address hinted at potential discontinuation of the rural employment scheme. He reminded that previous commitments had been made to extend employment under the scheme from 100 days to 125 days, but asserted that these promises were deceptive.
Tharamani accused the Centre of intending to undermine the programme and claimed that the DMK government was complicit in this agenda. He pointed out that the Centre had decreased its financial contribution and eliminated Mahatma Gandhi’s name from the scheme.
In response to these allegations, Rural Development Minister I. Periyasamy stated that the scheme is being systematically eroded by the BJP-led Union government. He recalled that initially, the Centre financed the entire cost of the programme, but has now transitioned to a 60:40 funding arrangement.
“The Centre has diluted the scheme and even removed Gandhi’s name. What protest did the AIADMK make against this?” he queried, directing his criticism at the opposition party.
Leader of the Opposition Edappadi K. Palaniswami interjected, accusing the DMK of not fulfilling its election pledge to enhance employment under the scheme to 150 days.
He mentioned that the AIADMK had welcomed the Centre’s decision to increase workdays to 125 and had strongly opposed any attempts to rename the scheme. “People cast their votes based on your promises. It is your responsibility to deliver on them,” he stated to the ruling party.
Chief Minister M. K. Stalin replied, asserting that while the demand for more workdays is reasonable, the authority to implement such changes lies with the Union government.
“We are not in power at the Centre. How can the State enact this independently? Your ally, the BJP, is in power at the Centre. You must raise your concerns there,” he remarked.
The debate escalated as Minister Periyasamy challenged whether the AIADMK MPs had ever stalled Parliament to oppose the funding reductions. He noted that the DMK had previously forced a 22-day disruption in Parliament over the Cauvery water dispute.
Another minister alleged that the AIADMK had obstructed Assembly proceedings to protect the BJP government.
As tensions rose, Thangamani reiterated that the AIADMK had pledged to increase employment to 150 days during its administration.
