Kolkata, April 3 (NationPress) On Thursday, the Supreme Court clarified that candidates deemed ineligible within the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) 2016 panel, who obtained appointments through financial transactions, will not only face job termination but are also obligated to repay the salaries received thus far along with applicable interest.
Preliminary estimates suggest that each affected individual might have to refund between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 26 lakh, according to sources from WBSSC.
However, individual repayments may vary based on years of service and the corresponding pay scales. Initial calculations were made using the entry-level pay scales for these ineligible candidates. Those in the higher secondary teacher category will have the highest repayments, while non-teaching staff in Group-D will have the lowest.
The repayment period for these candidates spans from 2019, the year marking the start of service for those selected from the WBSSC’s 2016 panel, until 2024. A division bench of the Calcutta High Court ordered the cancellation of 25,753 jobs across teaching and non-teaching roles in April of the previous year.
The division bench of the apex court, comprising Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, upheld the April 2024 order delivered by the Calcutta High Court’s division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi.
An ineligible teacher hired at the higher secondary level, with a starting average gross monthly salary of approximately Rs 44,000, will be required to refund around Rs 26 lakh. This repayment period also runs from 2019 to 2024, with no salary increments during that time.
Next in line are the ineligible candidates who obtained teaching positions at the secondary level. Each will need to repay roughly Rs 24 lakh, based on a starting average monthly gross salary of about Rs 40,000, assuming other conditions remain unchanged.
In the third category, non-teaching staff in Group-C, each individual with a starting average monthly gross salary of approximately Rs 26,000 will have to return around Rs 16 lakh.
The final category encompasses candidates selected for non-teaching positions in Group-D. Each individual, with a starting average monthly gross salary of around Rs 19,000, will need to repay approximately Rs 11 lakh.
