Kolkata, Sep 2 (NationPress) The government of West Bengal has established specific timeframes for the use of firecrackers during the upcoming festival season, commencing with Durga Puja.
These timeframes for the use of firecrackers on various festival days were announced in the West Bengal Assembly on the second day of the special session by Chandrima Bhattacharya, the state's Finance Minister (Independent charge) and Environment Minister.
According to Bhattacharya, the state has determined these timeframes for firecracker usage in alignment with the Central government’s guidelines.
On the occasions of Kali Puja and Diwali, a duration of two hours has been designated solely for the use of green firecrackers, specifically from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.
For Chhath Puja, the window for firecracker use is also set at two hours, from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Additionally, for both Christmas and New Year's Eve, only 40 minutes are permitted for firecracker use, between 11:55 p.m. and 12:35 a.m.
Bhattacharya stated, "Any breach of these time limits will be deemed a punishable offense. Those experiencing issues with noise pollution can directly report to the state via a dedicated helpline."
Earlier in January, the Supreme Court had prolonged the effect of orders from the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana governments, which imposed a complete ban on firecrackers in the NCR region.
The Supreme Court requested that the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana governments enforce the same ban conditions applicable in Delhi.
In November 2024, following Diwali, the Supreme Court noted that the firecracker ban was poorly enforced in the national capital, criticizing the Delhi government. It recommended sealing the premises of firecracker sellers and enforcing a ban on the import of firecrackers from neighboring states.
