Speaking to reporters in Lucknow, Akhilesh Yadav kept his response brief but pointed: 'Whoever wants to join us, we will welcome and accept them.' The remark was widely read as an open invitation — directed not just at disgruntled BJP figures, but potentially at allies whose relationships with the SP have grown strained in recent weeks.

Context Behind Brij Bhushan's Remark

Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh made his comment when asked about ongoing seat-sharing talks among Opposition parties, coming just days after a Congress leader publicly stated the party intends to contest at least 150 seats in the 2027 UP Assembly elections. SP leader Ambika Chaudhary interpreted Singh's words as a reflection of public mood, saying: 'He is expressing what he believes is the public sentiment in the state. In particular, he is referring to the situation that emerged in Ayodhya following the allegations of donation-related irregularities.'

SP-Congress Tensions Flare

The backdrop to Wednesday's remarks is a simmering rivalry between the SP and Congress over alliance terms and seat allocation. SP MP Iqra Hasan had reportedly asserted that only Akhilesh Yadav is capable of defeating the BJP in UP, suggesting Congress could achieve little on its own. Congress MP Imran Masood hit back sharply, saying: '...then don't form an alliance. Who is asking for it? Are we begging anyone? Let everyone do what they want. When a wedding procession sets out, there are many drummers, as well as people who dance and sing. Let these people dance and sing. We are focussed on our work.'

Imran Masood had earlier countered that Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is the only Opposition figure with a national reach capable of unsettling the BJP. The competing claims over who leads the anti-BJP coalition in UP signal that alliance negotiations remain far from settled.

Akhilesh Yadav is currently undertaking a 'PDA Rath Yatra', flagged off from Raebareli — the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Rahul Gandhi himself. The choice of launch venue has drawn considerable attention, with political observers noting that beginning the yatra in Gandhi's constituency carries an unmistakable symbolic charge, whether intentional or not.
