New Delhi, June 17 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that he will engage with numerous leaders at the G7 Summit in Canada to discuss critical global matters.
Having arrived in Calgary, Canada, he is set to participate in this important gathering.
Upon his arrival on Tuesday, he shared on his X handle that he will highlight the priorities of the Global South during these discussions.
“Just landed in Calgary, Canada, for the G7 Summit. I will meet various leaders at the summit to share my insights on significant global challenges and underscore the needs of the Global South,” PM Modi mentioned on his X handle.
He was welcomed in Calgary by Acting Indian High Commissioner Chinmoy Naik, Canadian officials, and representatives of Canada's First Nations, the indigenous peoples of the country.
Following this, he will head to the scenic resort town of Kananaskis, where the summit commenced earlier on Monday under stringent security measures, featuring him and other invitees in the Tuesday session.
His trip to Canada follows a fruitful visit to Cyprus, where he held extensive discussions on the comprehensive scope of India-Cyprus relations with President Nikos Christodoulides.
Before departing from India, PM Modi had posted on X stating that the G7 summit offers a remarkable opportunity to share viewpoints on various global issues and expand upon the priorities of the Global South.
He is expected to have discussions with G7 leaders including President Emmanuel Macron of France, Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba of Japan, Chancellor Friedrich Merz of Germany, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President Antonio Costa, and the host, Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Notably, PM Modi will not meet with US President Donald Trump, who is shortening his presence at the summit to address the Iran-Israel crisis.
Other attendees at the G7 meeting include Presidents Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine, Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of Brazil, and Lee Jae-Myung of South Korea, as well as Prime Ministers Anthony Albanese of Australia and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.
This summit presents a unique opportunity for PM Modi to engage directly with influential leaders from developed nations following the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22 and the Operation Sindoor targeting terrorist groups in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir.
PM Modi's visit occurs at a crucial time for India-Canada relations, which Carney aims to revive after challenges posed by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who had been swayed by Khalistan advocates.
