This event, titled ‘Conference on Women Peacekeepers from the Global South’, convened female peacekeepers from 35 countries to discuss the evolving contributions of women in peacekeeping missions. It is organized by the Ministry of External Affairs in conjunction with the Ministry of Defence, according to an official announcement.
The primary goal of the conference is to bolster the role of women in UN peacekeeping through dialogue, sharing of experiences, and enhancing collaboration among Global South nations, as stated.
On the first day, participants engaged with President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. This was succeeded by a keynote address from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
During his opening remarks, Vice Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen N.S. Raja Subramani emphasized: "Women peacekeepers have dismantled stereotypes, overcome obstacles, and emerged as leaders and protectors for their nations and within the communities they serve in peacekeeping endeavors."
"As a pivotal player in the Global South, India offers a wealth of experience, resources, and expertise to contribute to the collective mission of developing nations," he stated, adding: "We, as representatives of the Global South, unite in strength, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to global peace."
In his address, Deputy Chief of Army Staff, IS&C, Lt Gen Rakesh Kapoor pointed out that international humanitarian law is encountering significant challenges, complicating the tasks of peacekeepers.
He also recognized that women peacekeepers serve as role models for women empowerment and inspire women in host nations to participate in the upliftment of their communities.
On the first day of the conference, a session titled 'Addressing Sexual Exploitation and Abuse' was conducted, focusing on mechanisms for preventing, reporting, and addressing instances of sexual exploitation and abuse within peacekeeping settings.
